Information for Registering .co.uk and .org.uk Domains
The co.uk and .org.uk Opportunity
More and more of your customers will soon be embarking on their
own online global expansion. If the latest trends are any indication,
the .uk namespace will likely be one of their first stops.
According to Nominet, 150,000 new .co.uk names are registered every
month. To date, .co.uk and .org.uk names account for over 10 percent
of the total number of domain names registered.
Offering .co.uk and org.uk as part of your portfolio is also a simple
way to send a very powerful message about your business (even to
those who do not currently want these domain names). It lets your
customers know that you are anticipating and meeting all their domain
name needs and makes them aware that they can count on you to continue
to expand your selection of ccTLDs and, eventually, new gTLDs.
Rules for .uk domains
- Two letter names are not allowed -- they are reserved for ISO
country codes.
- Two character names are allowed. i.e. 3x.co.uk where the
format is not aa.foo.uk.
- All second level names of .uk are banned from being used as
third level names. i.e. nhs.co.uk would be banned as it is
a second level name.
- All top level domains are banned from being used as third level
names. i.e. net.org.uk and org.co.uk are not allowed.
- All one character domain names (ie [a-z0-9].xxx.uk) are reserved
for possible future sub-domain usage. The only one currently delegated
is X.CO.UK. The owner shall still maintain it unless they volunteer
to relinquish it.
- There shall be at least two nameservers for the domain (with
addresses specified in the request) operating at the time the
request is submitted. There is no restriction on the physical
location or IP address of these nameservers.
